Building parts from a PDF drawing or a sketch photo

Drop a drawing or a photo of a sketch into the chat; imCAD reads the dimensions and rebuilds it as an editable SOLIDWORKS model.

By imCAD

Many parts start from a supplier's drawing or a hand sketch on paper. Instead of reading every dimension and remodeling it, hand it straight to imCAD.

Sending files to imCAD

  • Click the attach button in the chat box to choose a file, or drag the file in.
  • Paste screenshots straight in with Ctrl+V.
  • Images (sketch photos, drawing scans) and PDF files are accepted.
  • You can draw marks on an image before sending to point out what matters.

Then type a short request:

Rebuild the part from the attached drawing, with the exact dimensions shown, in C45 steel.

Tips so imCAD reads it right

  • Clear, straight photos: shoot square to the page, with enough light, so the dimension numbers are legible.
  • Add what the drawing lacks: a flat sketch often has no thickness; a drawing may not state the material. Put it in your request.
  • One part at a time: for an assembly drawing with several parts, say which part to build.

Always review the plan

With drawings, imCAD shows its plan and a sketch before building. This is the moment to compare with the original: if a dimension was misread, say so before any feature is created. After building, imCAD reads back the bounding box and volume for you to check.

The result

The part is a native SOLIDWORKS file with a full feature tree, as editable as a part you built yourself. Long jobs (many drawings) can run in the background, see Background tasks.
